Around Errington Wood

Starting at Errington Wood car park here near New Marske, anticlockwise around the edge of Errington Wood. Over Tocketts Beck, past Tocketts House and through Tocketts Mill Country Park. Then its heading through fields north, past Upleatham and back into the wood.

Starting in the car park, plenty of spaces here with some to the north looking over the field.

Looking over the field, north to Redcar with the windfarm out to sea. For closer pics checkout the Redcar to South Gare Tour.

From the car park head to the woods, almost straight away you will see a set of stairs on the right hand side, head up these.

The stairs lead to another dirt path, now heading south, keep along this path all the while heading south.

Carry straight over the cross roads along Sandy Lane with a view to the right of the Cleveland Hills and Roseberry Topping both covered in the Lordstones Peaks and Roseberry Topping Loop tours.

Keep following the lane south with the woods on the left and fields on the right.

Here, as the lane turns to a footpath at the edge of Soap Well Wood are a couple of gates. The gate on the right is where we will be continuing through, the gate on the left is where we re-join this lane much later in the trek.

A little uphill along the footpath towards Fir Rigg Wood, turning right over this large stile and heading along the top of the field.

The view west from the top of the field.

Continue along the edge of the field with Fir Rigg Wood on the left and through this “gate”.

Follow the path for a short while with a little zig zag along a gavel track, continuing south. Now with Raisbeck Wood on the left the path leads onto a grassy hillside. It is difficult to see a path, just head downhill to the bottom of the field and around the edge of the wood on the right

There is a gate in the corner of the field with a footbridge visible through the undergrowth. Head through this gate and over the footbridge and over Tocketts Beck.

The path follows the beck for a short while and then heads up these stairs leaving the woods at a field by Tocketts House.

Pass through Tocketts House along the gravel road and at this road/footpath junction head left, through the gap in the wooden fence.

Follow the path, east, along the edge of a field and then through a small wood towards Tocketts Mill.

The entrance to Tocketts Mill, follow the road, back over Tocketts Beck.

Just after crossing the beck turn left and head between these two holiday cabins. The footpath is a little difficult to spot so look for the brick path leading to a wooden handrail with the path heading off up the hill into the trees.

The area can get a little boggy here as you head up through the woods and the path has seen better days. But, after a short distance you reach the edge of a field at Barker Ground.

At the corner of the field take the gravel trac uphill, northwest through some fields towards Upleatham.

Now heading north, near the top of the hill, with a view through the trees of the hills above Saltburn covered in the Saltburn, Trig Point, Skinningrove, Pier and Tramway and Saltburn Trig Point tours.

Keep following the track north, down a dip and back up towards this farm building which you head along the right hand side of and through the metal gate to the right.

You’ll see on my map route that there is a little diversion at this point, the official path into Village Wood by these wooden posts is overgrown and has been barely passable for years. Just head along the edge of the field another few metres for an un-signposted entrance to the wood in the second pic below.

No signpost, but a well worn path into the wood.

The dirt path then takes you northeast through the woods and along the edge of some fields as you head from Village Wood and turn left and head west into Errington Wood.

There are various footpaths through the woods heading west. My route picked the top-most path each time along the top edge of the woods with the fields to the left.

One of my favourite pics, over the fields at Beacon Moor.

The path heads along the top of the hill for quite some distance with a gap in the trees every now and then for a view over New Marske, Marske and Redcar.

Keep following the path.

And keep an eye out for this sculpture on the left hand side of the top path.

After a mile or so you get to the most westerly edge of the woods with a view from the top of the hill of the industry by Redcar, Dunsdale Wood and of course, Rosey.

The path heads south, back to Soap Well Wood past an old, disused Quarry.

The final part of the path turns from dirt to grassy, through the trees of Soap Well Wood and back to the gate shown earlier in this writeup.

After passing through the gate and re-joining the track, it’s just a case of retracing your steps back along Sandy Lane heading north to the car park.
