The smaller loop, up carlton bank and around

The smaller loop, up Carlton Bank and over Bilsdale West Moor.

This was based on a trek I did with family many years ago, parking at Lordstones Country Park and heading up Carlton Bank then turning left and crossing Bilsdale West Moor. I think the path I took followed that old route.

Leaving the car park via the road entrance, turning right and following the road for a short while until you get to this Cleveland Way signpost where we head left along the stone footpath and uphill.

Follow the path up lots and lots of steps, its fine to have a break now and then. At the top you get to the Carlton Bank trig point.

At the trig point there are a few paths and tracks, head down the sandy gravel track heading south and head over the moors. It was here where I spotted a paraglider waiting for the wind, he was looking a little…deflated.

Keeping heading south over the moors along the track for a couple of miles.

Past Brian’s Pond at Clough Gill Top.

Eventually there is a downhill track where you follow the path to the left in an easterly direction.

Continue on the same path, through this gate towards Raisdale Mill.

The track, Mill Lane got muddy, a regular cow path, so it wasn’t all mud 💩

The culprits couldn’t believe I was heading down that path, “Pull the udder one”.

One cow in particular was really wanting a good view of me slipping over on a cow pat.

After making it down the path, turn left through Raisdale Mill and follow the path through the forest in a north westerly direction.

After clearing the forest plantation these are the views of Wath Hill. You follow Raisdale Beck for some of the way and it can get a bit marshy here.

It’s then a case of heading north for around another mile through fields and past Staindale and Thwaites House back to Lordstones
