Healaugh to Surrender Mine

Healaugh to Surrender Mine ruins and back.

Visiting an old family haunt called Five Intakes near Healaugh. This route starts here in Healaugh Village with a fairly steep climb and then follows an anti-clockwise loop heading west through moorland along the valley to the Surrender Mine ruins and Surrender Bridge. Then back east along the other side of the valley mainly following a narrow road and grassy fields.

The parking spot, where we left Tiggy.

Then a very steep uphill road, this pic is looking downhill at where we had walked from, the stone buildings being Healaugh Village.

A few photos along the way. After the initial uphill, the path is level for most of the way along grassy and sometimes peaty/marshy ground.

To the right is Five Intakes where my relatives used to holiday.

After a mile or so of level ground it’s an drop down into a small valley by Cringley Bottom and then this uphill, the last of the climbs.

Now heading downhill, the first view of Surrender Mine.

After a picnic at the ruins we crossed Surrender Bridge and headed back to Healaugh, following this road for some of the way to Brockma Gill.

Across the valley a view of where the hike started.

Turning left off the road onto a footpath through fields just after Brockma Gill and Hilltop. The path continues through some fields and finally woodland as you cross the river via a footbridge.

Skye leading the way and checking the bridge was safe.

After crossing the river follow the path for a short distance through the woods then turn right through a few fields back to Healaugh and Tiggy.
