Redcar to Saltburn
July 2026

A paddle along Redcar beach to Saltburn and back.

Taking in Redcar seafront, Redcar Rocks and along the beach to Saltburn Pier. A copy of the Redcar to South Gare walk, but in the other direction.

If you are planning a trek or paddle on Redcar beach check the tide times. This walk is a long one so bear that in mind when checking when high tide is.

Starting at Redcar seafront the walk starts by the promenade and this memorial to the ‘Birger’. “This anchor is from the wreck of the Finnish sailing vessel ‘Birger’ which struck the Saltscar rock on 18th October 1898. Thirteen of the fifteen man crew, lost their lives. The anchor is a memorial to all mariners who perished off this coastline and was recovered by Cleveland Divers Club in 1999”.

A little further along the seafront to the location where the old Redcar Pier used to stand.

A larger pic of how the pier used to look. For mroe info check out the a href=”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcar_Pier” style=”color:#FF0000;” target=”_blank”>Wikipedia article.

Here’s a view of the beach by the new-ish seawall, looking southeast towards Saltburn.

Further onto the beach for a look back at Redcar and the Redcar Beacon.

And in the other direction, the sea, Redcar Wind Farm and Redcar Rocks.

Severe storms and high tides occasionally strip sand from Redcar Beach to reveal a submerged, mineral-preserved prehistoric forest dating back 6,000 to 10,000 years. These fossilized remains of birch, oak, beech, and sycamore trees are part of Doggerland, the ancient landmass once linking Britain to Europe—appear only at low tide.

After taking in some of the sights, the walk begins. Heading down the beach towards Marske and Saltburn, this pic looking back towards Redcar.

Not far along the beach to the groynes. Depending on the tide you can walk around, climb over (in places its easy as parts are missing) or head onto the esplanade to follow the coastline south east. In the distance on this pic is Huntcliff near Saltburn and beyond that the cliffs past Skinningrove. All covered in various other Tiggy Tours: Saltburn Trig Point, Saltburn to Skinningrove, Skinningrove to Mars and in the faint distance the Cowbar Clifftops tour.

Following the waves and approaching Marske-by-the-Sea with Cliff House on the horizon.

Further along the beach, passing by Marske-by-the-Sea, looking back to the steeple of St Germain’s Church peaking over the hill.

Carry on along the beach and Saltburn begins to appear.

With colourful beach huts…

…and a pier. Also covered in the Saltburn Pier Tour.

As the pics show, it was a sunny day, so Saltburn was a little busy. Time to head along the seafront, over Skelton Beck where it’s a little quieter for some chips at Cat Nab Fish n Chips followed by a lemontop at Edna’s Ices.

Over the road from Cat Nab Car Park, the fishermans car/tractor/boat park.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Saltburn without a quick meander along the pier and a selection of photos looking back towards the coast.

With the sights seen it’s time to head back. Following exactly the same route along the beach, back to Redcar.
